Four generations have produced wine in the Mautner vineyard Schrefl-Wolf, and from the very start it was the women who called the shots. Today it is Christina Schrefl who is responsible for running the business. The Schrefls are highly ambitious and work hard on their three hectares, and their particular focus is the production of Federspiel. Their aim is to capture the typical characteristics of a given grape variety, as well as of the terroir, and in order to achieve this they rigorously select and reduce the grape materials in their vineyard. The outcome of this process is a crystal-clear and succulent Veltliner, as well as a Riesling which combines spiciness and fruit, and also a classic ‘Gemischter Satz’ (cuvee), for which three grape varieties are harvested and vinified at the same time. Muscatel Ottonel dominates in this mixture, and its fine aromatic structure is particularly popular with regular customers. Customers can either buy directly from the vineyard or else visit Christina Schrefl’s tri-annual Heurigen, during the course of which her entire range of wines can be sampled together with delectable Wachau specialities.
