At Landgasthaus Essl, heritage and conviction, tradition and contemporary spirit come together. Since 2022, Philipp and Marie-Theres Essl have been running the restaurant together as the second generation – with respect for what has grown over time and the courage to consistently pursue their own path.
What has remained is the deep connection to the region. What has evolved is their distinctive signature. Since as early as 2012, Philipp has been carefully and steadily shaping the culinary direction, developing it from the strong foundation laid by his parents and gradually making it his own. In 2022, the official handover of the house followed – and since then, Philipp and Marie-Theres have shared responsibility for the kitchen, service, and the restaurant’s overall vision.
At its heart is the Essenz Menu – a culinary journey through the respective season. It captures what the fields, forests, and producers currently have to offer, telling stories of aromas and moods, of lightness, depth, and craftsmanship. Each course is finely balanced, thoughtfully conceived, and executed with respect for the product and its origin. At Landgasthaus Essl, regional cuisine means more than tradition.
It is the conscious evolution of what already exists – the connection of inherited knowledge with new ideas, of down-to-earth authenticity with precision, of memory with perspective.
This philosophy is also reflected in the service, led by Marie-Theres. With a keen sense of hospitality and atmosphere, she understands service as an independent, creative part of the overall experience. Here, too, traditional knowledge finds its place: oxymel is prepared in-house, kombucha is brewed and fermented on site. Traditional methods are given a contemporary interpretation and naturally complement the cuisine – as non-alcoholic pairings or as components of finely tuned beverage accompaniments.
Together, Philipp and Marie-Theres have also adapted the spaces to reflect their understanding of gastronomy: open, reduced, warm. A place that mirrors the culinary philosophy – honest, sensitive, and clear.
