Süssenberg refers to the sloped area behind the town of Mauternbach. The name can be traced back to the year 1299.
The profile from the Süßenberg exhibits a very complex structure. Up to a depth of 120 cm, rocks from very different time periods are encountere. Glacial loess forms the base, which then transitions from a loamified zone (brown) into sand. The next layer consists of rubble that was deposited during the older Mindel glaciation, coming to rest on top of the loess after movement on the slope. Above this there is a mixture of loess and paragneiss and amphibolite material, whereby the loess influence decreases towards the top. The balanced water supply in the deep profile ensures wines of consistently high quality even in dry years.
