A passion for winegrowing runs in the Pöchlinger family, and when Brigitte and Ernst took over the vineyard 30 years ago, they were able to look back to numerous previous generations, who have produced wine in and around Mitterarnsdorf for centuries. Hence it is not surprising that even their vaulted cellar is 300 years old: the family’s wines are still vinified and matured in this cellar, owing to its perfect humidity levels and temperature. There is, then, much history on this vineyard, but it is beautifully combined with innovative ideas. The innovative impulses mainly come from Matthias, who represents the next generation: he is a certified winegrower. His ideas impact both on the vineyard, in which sustainable winegrowing practices foster the biodiversity and the vitality of the soil, and are also present in the cellar, where interventions into natural processes are kept to an absolute minimum. In addition to Veltliner and Riesling – the two main protagonists – the family also produces Muskateller, Frühroter Veltliner and some Zweigelt. It is actually possible to call on the Pöchlingers at any time during the year, but it is best to visit them when the doors of their Heurigen are open. Then, visitors can get comfortable in the lovely sunny courtyard, and sample both various homemade specialities from the region as well as the complete range of the Pöchlinger’s wines. It is certainly worth it.
