Leopold Böhmer has two aces up his sleeves: first, the perfect location of his winery in the heart of Dürnstein, and second, his excellent Federspiele and Smaragde, which grant impressive insights into the less famous but by no means less spectacular terraces of the Eastern region of the Wachau. His best Veltliner, for example, comes from the imposingly steep Liebenberg, while his Riesling grows on the Pfaffenberg. His classic Veltliner and Riesling are neatly complemented by Muskateller and Sauvignon, Traminer and Neuburger. Böhmer considers the latter a pet issue and usually produces it in the Smaragd category. It is possible to taste Böhmer’s wines on numerous occasions: from spring onwards, his home in an age-old Dürnsteiner building is open to visitors. Together with a multilingual expert he also offers wine tastings in English, German and French. While sampling Böhmer’s delectable wines, one can thus learn everything one always wanted to know about the Wachau. Finally, his Heurigen opens twice a year, usually during the advent and the carnival seasons. To those who cannot easily transport his wines (such as cyclists or those travelling by ship), Böhmer offers a wine shipping service, covering most locations in Europe.
