The vineyard covers an area of 25 ha with impressive terraces, and counts among the vineyards with the most southern orientation in Weißenkirchen. These clay-rich soils are so-called "minute-soils", since they only offer a narrow time window for optimal cultivation. In combination with classic Gföhl gneiss landslide material, they provide a maturity comparable to the neighbouring Achleiten vineyard, but with a slightly cooler and dark fruity aroma.
The Weitenberg represents the western cornerstone of the Gföhl gneiss formation in the Wachau wine region. For the most part, the bedrock base is buried with stable sharp-edged rubble consisting of large rocks up to several metres in size, which are composed of Gföhl gneiss and a loam-kaolin intermediate material. The material is thought to be from fossilised rockslides or landslides. The profile shows a section. The soil consists of a loam matrix with embedded Gföhl gneiss stones. The topsoil is carbonate-free and has a 20-cm-thick humus horizon, while stones and cracks in the subsoil are coated with carbonate material. Grüner Veltliner thrives best on this special heavy soil, resulting in elegant and structured wines.
