The "Im Weingebirge" vineyard is part of the “Alte Point" and consists mainly of loess, in the deeper subsoil paragneiss comes through.
Two types of highly differing rock occurring in the Mautern Weingebirge could not contrast more starkly: at bottom, a dark, approx. 350-million-year-old amphibolite; above, loess from the most recent glaciation period lasting until about 12,000 years ago; below, pure silicate rock material; above, 20–30 per cent lime content; below, rock transformed through orogenic processes; above, material deposited by winds; below, solid; above, easily penetrated by roots and with ample water storage capacity etc. Many contrasting characteristics could be added to the list.
