The Stöger family has been cultivating four hectares both of well-known and lesser-known terraces for four generations. In the Dürnsteiner vineyards, where Veltliner and Muskateller dominate, Gregor Stöger owns parcels in the Supperin, the Hollerin, the Wunderburg and above all in the Oberhauser, where his flagship Veltliner grows. Yet he also owns terraces on the Weissenkirchener Steinriegel and on the Schreiberberg, an extremely steep prehistoric rock terrace situated right between the two villages, where the Danube bends. The Schreiberberg terrace is perfect for Riesling, which Gregor Stöger turns into an admirable wine that features fine stone-fruit aromas and intensive minerals. He vinifies his wines in a stainless steel tank in order further to emphasize their fruit and mineral characteristics.
It is possible to sample the entire range of the family’s wines in a beautiful Heurigen, which is situated on a gentle slope from where one can enjoy a wonderful view of the Danube. The wines are neatly complemented by homemade specialities. Those who wish to explore Dürnstein, its ruin and the fate of Richard Lionheart and the Kuenringern in more detail are invited to rent one of the family’s three holiday apartments.
