Description

A section of the Axpoint vineyard with a deep and nutrient-rich subsoil. In view of this designation, it is important to note the associated cadastral commune: there is also a vineyard with the name "Hochrain" in the nearby town of Wösendorf.

Soil Profile Hochrain (Spitz)

The Axpoint slope is located in the sheltered basin surrounding Spitz. Persistent westerlies during the last ice ages deposited thick layers of loess. Loess consists mainly of silt, soil of a grain-size fraction between coarse sand and fine clay, which can be easily transported by wind (silt: 0.063-0.002 mm). The mineral composition of loess is dominated by quartz, feldspars, micas, clay minerals and calcite (carbonate). Iron oxides give the loess a yellowish-brown colour.
In the Hochrain, a section of the Axpoint vineyard, the humic topsoil has already been loamified by weathering. The sharp boundary between the loamified topsoil and the still fresh, ochre-coloured loess was created by deep tillage down to a depth of approx. 60 cm. The deep calcareous soil is fertile and provides sufficient water supply even during dry periods.
