‘Everyone has in his cellar/A Veltliner and a Muskateller’ asserts an old song from the Wachau region. The Weixelbaum family own an old tree press in addition, which is now a fabulous sight to behold in one of the most rustic and comfortable Heurigen in the Wachau. This monumental old press is nine metres long and measures 70 cm in diameter, and Heinrich Weixelbaum, father of the present owner Martin, still used it to press his wines; above all Veltliner, but also Riesling, Frühroter Veltliner and of course Muskateller.    Nowadays the family owns state-of-the-art presses and uses them to process grapes together with their stalks. This is a rather unusual procedure, but the Weixelbaums do it gently and slowly, and thus manage to elicit additional nuances from their grape material. They press wines in all the Wachau categories which, in addition, come from some of the best terraces in Weissenkirchen.   It is possible to taste the family’s range of wines four times a year in their Heurigen, which is situated in one of the oldest and most beautiful houses in Weissenkirchen. It is also highly recommendable that visitors try some of their delicious spirits, such as the Marillenbrand, but especially the fine Veltlinerbrand, which has matured for a long time in the barrel and is comparable to spirits from the Cognac region.
