Description

Although Ralais is listed as a section of the Hochrain vineyard, it asserts its independence year after year. The dry stony soils developed from weathered paragneiss form a strong contrast to the deeper soils that dominate in Hochrain, which are mostly influenced by loess.

Bodenprofil Ralais

The stratified sediments from which the gneiss was formed are reflected by a rich mineralogical composition and the colour pallet of the rock package. The appearance of paragneisses is extremely diverse.
The carbonate content, while low, is enough to give the soil a good structure. The numerous pores are important for good aeration and ensure rapid water uptake during rainfall.
Due to the steepness of the upper Ralais, the weathered material is constantly subject to erosion. For this reason, the rock is very compact compared to locations with gentler slopes.
