Hinter der Burg designates a plateau that is adjacent to the "Burg" district in Weißenkirchen. The name "Hinterburg" was already documented in 1506 in an agreement found at the Benedictine Monastery at Michaelbeuern, stipulating a life-long pension (Leibgedingevertrag).
The Hinter der Burg vineyard lies at the foot of the Seiber. Due to the footslope location, erosion and gravity have led to the deposition of deep soils. Humus-rich soil material was also transported in the process, and led to the formation of a 25 cm mineral humus horizon. The nutrient and water supply is very balanced thanks to the extensive rooting zone and the high humus content. Grüner Veltliner thrives on these fertile soils, delivering excellent harvests.
