Company information

The Spitzer Graben (one of the Wachau’s lesser-known regions) is still an insider’s tip, and it is there that Piewald family produces its wines. Its vineyards have been in the possession of the family for generations. In the past, they cultivated a variety of crops, but nowadays the Piewalds concentrate above all on wine. In addition, a few apricot trees supply the fruit for brilliant spirits. Most of the terraces tower high above Gut am Steg, and one would normally expect to find their many extremely steep slopes and bents in highland terrain. Work in these high altitude vineyards is almost always manual. Yet Helmut Piewald knows well what the unique advantages of his vineyards are, and produces great single vineyard wines from his terraces on the Biern, the Kalkofen and the Zornberg. As the climate in the Graben is cool, harvests take place late in the year, supporting further the development of finer aromas. Finesse and elegance can be found in the Riesling and the Veltliner, but also in the Muscatel and the Neuburger, in the Steinfedern as well as in the Smaragde. The focus is on elegant, wholesome and long-lasting wines, which have already matured extensively in the cellar.   Those who wish to explore the region and enjoy the hospitality of the Piewald family are very welcome not just to sample their excellent wines but also to rent their holiday apartment.
