Smaragde® 2010

On 9 and 10 September, the Vinea winemakers organised a tasting of selected Smaragd wines in the Teisenhoferhof.

The Wachau’s wide range of single vineyard sites were the highlights. Resonant names like Singerriedel and Achleiten demonstrated the signature of the Wachau terroir, which is independent of the grape variety and winemaker.

Wine lovers and journalists came to meet their favourite winemakers and to make new discoveries. There was agreement on the high quality of the vintage. The Veltliners shone for their freshness and vitality, whilst the Rieslings showed immense class and the promise of significant ability to age.

The Wachau terroir

On 29 May at VieVinum 2010 "The terroir of the Wachau” event took place.

A completely revised map of the vineyards was presented, and this will soon also be available for consumers. National and international journalists, wine merchants and wine lovers crowded together into the Kleiner Redoutensaal room in the Hofburg Palace to get the inside track on the secrets of the Wachau. The high point was the tasting of a flight of 18 Smaragd wines from the great 2007 vintage, led by World Champion sommelier Aldo Sohm and wine journalist Philipp Blom. It was a tasting full of superlatives.
